There is something about our no longer experiencing places that are wild, that shuts us down. Wilderness is a place of unpredictability, where you are nothing more than a dot on a predators radar and all your life skills of micromanaging will do little to release you from whatever fate awaits you. This same lack of proportion about how important we are as individuals and what we are responsible for affects us in birth and as parents. Imagine a wilderness that goes about its way despite our being there, where we are on unchartered grounds and are unaware of how wild things perceive us. This is true humility. And in birth, we return to the wild. Oh yes, we try to pretend it is civilization, a controlled environment, where we are important, where our accumulated knowledge will serve us well…but we are denying that we are a playing out an act as old as this earth and it will go on with or without our understanding of it and despite our fears of losing control, the control was never ours to begin with.
